This week's Drive It! focuses on three words: freedom, power, and space. Freedom, that's for the Mini Roadster, the first open-top two-seater in the company's history. It's a daring experiment. Power is what you'll find in two archetypes of automotive bodybuilding, the Mercedes A63 AMG and the BMW M3. Enjoy their V-8 engines with us while you still can. Present it! The new Roadster - the first two-seat convertible in Mini’s historyThe Roadster sees MINI presenting the first open-top two-seater in the marque’s history. The aim was to transfer its own signature form vocabulary to the proportions of a roadster. Buyers will have to decide whether the ambitious experiment is a success. It looks great with the top down - but with the roof up the attempt to marry the unmistakable Mini with the slick profile of a convertible seems a bit awkward. But the transformation from frog to prince is swift; the top is easily closed and opened. Plus, of course, there’s that classic Mini-style go-kart feel. Once the car reaches the 80 kph mark, the active rear spoiler automatically pops out. Drive it! introduces the new Mini. Compare it! Mercedes C63 AMG - BMW M3A wisp of nostalgia already surrounds these two, because they're the last of their kind: featuring high-revving V8 aspirated engine. That's even though Mercedes has only just introduced its latest model, the C63 AMG. BMW's M3 has been on the market since 2008.Now Mercedes is trying to topple the old champion. It will be the last duel ahead of the dawning era of turbo engines. The need to save fuel doesn't stop even at these performance levels. And, despite the misty eyes, that's a good thing. Drive it! put these muscle cars through their paces. Test it! The Fiat FreemontThe new people carrier from Fiat is designed for all the family. The Freemont is based largely on the Dodge Journey. After buying up Chrysler, the Italians decided to rebadge the Journey, giving it more of a European feel. The interior is modern, with high-quality materials and sound workmanship. The Freemont is spacious, comfortable and versatile. Its has seven seats, and those for the passengers can all be folded flat, allowing maximum space for cargo. Drive it! takes the new Fiat out for a spin. Vintage - the Honda S800Our car tester Christoph Bauer takes a trip back in time with a real automotive milestone from the 1960s: the Honda S800. Its elegant contours are reminiscent of classic British roadsters like the Triumph TR 4 or MG B. But the ride factor in this baby is more medieval than modern, thanks in particular to the solid axle at the back. That said: even by today’s standards, a ride in the Honda S800 really is something special. No other car could coax so much power and fun out of a 0.8-liter capacity.

Since then this sporty looking sedan has sold 320 thousand times around the world. Now Volkswagen has brought out a completely updated version of the model. And that includes the name too. They've dropped the Passat. This is a pure VW CC. The idea is to make it stands out alone and lift it above the Passat range. Optically and technically the new CC has slight changes to design and more wide ranging additions to the set up. The model is already on sale in Europe.
In this edition Drive it! shows that luxury and performance on the one hand and common sense and environmental compatibility on the other are not irreconcilable in the car world.Start it: VW CCVW introduced the Passat CC four years ago. Compare it: Porsche Panamera S Hybrid - Mercedes S- Class S 250 CDI BEPorsche and Mercedes: synonyms for luxury and performance. The high fuel costs in running luxury sedans have not frightened off the excusive clientele in the past. But things are changing. Cars can still cost a lot of money. But the upper market segment is beginning to think green as well. Porsche has introduced its Panamera S hybrid to cater for that market. Mercedes has brought out the S 250 CDI Blue Efficiency. Which is the more fuel efficient?
A non-competing vehicle that can determine the outcome of a race.Huge leads can be whittled down and entire race strategies destroyed. But safety has to have top priority. Safety Cars in Formula 1 debuted at the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix, and since 1996 have been provided by Mercedes’ works tuner AMG. The cars’ mission: to take the danger out of hazardous situations. The SLS AMG will again be heading the field occasionally this season. Drive it! meets Bernd Mayländer, who’s been at the wheel of the safety car for 12 years. He shows us the special features that make the SLS AMG Safety Car so unique.

The BMW i8 concept is a plug-in hybrid that embodies the vision of a modern, sustainable sports car.
The two MPVs share a common history. The first generation of the people-carrier in 1995 was ultimately a joint production from Ford, Seat and Volkswagen. Although the collaboration ended three years later, with Ford developing the second generation of the Galaxy on its own, the basic structure of the carmakers' models remained virtually identical until 2006. The second generation of the Seat Alhambra has been on the market since 2010. Drive it! takes a closer look at the most powerful diesel versions of the two models. The Alhambra delivers 125 kW of power, the Galaxy delivers 147 kW. So what other differences are there between the close cousins?

This edition of Drive it! takes us to the automotive past, present and future. There’s the new Audi A4, and a review of BMW’s electric concept cars. We also pay a nostalgic visit to the original VW Bug and its revamped successor, the New Beetle. Plus a report on a car that can influence the outcome of Formula 1 races despite not competing. Present it! Audi A4Now in its 8th generation, the A4 has become Audi’s best-selling model. In almost 40 years, Audi has sold almost 10 million units of the A4 and its predecessor the Audi 80. Now the carmaker presents a massively revamped A4 series. The design is even bolder. The horizontal lines at the front are more pronounced, and the bulge in the hood is more prominent. The revamped engines are said to consume up to 11% less fuel. Together, the sedan and Avant wagon models offer a choice of six TDI and four diesel versions. Drive it! tests the new A4 sedan powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI engine.Compare it! The Seat Alhambra and Ford GalaxyThe two MPVs share a common history. Picture it! The BMW i3 and i8The two concepts are intended to give us a glimpse of the automotive future. The i3 concept is set to be BMW’s first mass-produced fully electric car, and has been designed with tomorrow’s urban traffic already in mind. The BMW i8 concept is a plug-in hybrid that embodies the vision of a modern, sustainable sports car. The i8 combines the modified electric engine from the i3 (front axle) with a 164 kW/300 Nm three-cylinder high-performance gasoline engine (rear axle). The dynamic duo are due out in late 2012 or early 2013. Test it! The VW BeetleThe New Beetle constitutes a difficult challenge for Volkswagen. The new generation aims to capture some of the magic of the Bug-original. That didn’t really work out in the 1998 incarnation of the New Beetle, which was never accepted by Bug fans as a worthy successor. The latest attempt from VW is a modern car determined to convey that genuine Bug feel. Constantin Beims asked Bug connoisseurs what they make of the New Beetle.Admire it! The Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Formula 1 Safety CarA non-competing vehicle that can determine the outcome of a race.Huge leads can be whittled down and entire race strategies destroyed.

The gear transmission ratio is ten percent faster than that of its predecessor, making it easier to steer. But the Honda Accord Type S is also kitted out with a sporty look. Depending on driving style, road profile and outside temperature, the fully charged battery will take the car distances between 40 and 80 kilometers on battery power alone - which is still unusual in the e-mobility segment.A classical gasoline combustion engine helps extend the range to up to 500 kilometers. But since the batteries recharge in around four hours, the Ampera can master most inner-city stretches in ultra-quiet electric mode.

Roof Boxes - Packing and Travelling SafelyWhen families go on vacation the trunk is usually jam-packed. Many drivers invest in a roof box to give them extra storage space. But is driving with this extra load on the roof really safe?Together with the DEKRA technical testing service, we conducted tests on a compact car and an SUV to see how they handled - with and without roof boxes. An expert from DEKRA shows us why it's vital to reduce your speed when travelling with a fully-packed roof box.

In this edition of Drive It! We look at the souped-up John Cooper Works Coupe of the Mini; a battle of efficiency between electric and diesel Smarts; and the new Mercedes B-Class tries to combine the stylish with the solid.present it! The Mini CoupeThe Mini family welcomes a rather flash new addition: the John Cooper Works Coupé. The design is extravagant, featuring a low and sporty profile and a chunky rear. The two-seater also boasts an active rear spoiler that automatically rises at speeds in excess of 80 km/h in order to increase the pressure on the rear axle. There are four engines available for selection. We treated ourselves to the most dynamic one, delivering 155 kilowatts of power. compare it! Electric Smart vs. Diesel SmartWith the electric Smart due to go into mass production in 2012, we decided to put one through its paces to check its practical credentials. This involved a face-off against stiff competition from a close relative - the diesel-powered Smart cdi. In visual terms the two Smarts are difficult to tell apart. But our car expert Alexandra Feders certainly discovered a few differences.
test it! The Mercedes B ClassThe coffee house is a big Vienna tradition with an appeal to the young and old alike. Appealing to all generations is what big-on-tradition Mercedes wants to do with the B-Class. Until now the car has had a reputation for catering more to seniors than the style-conscious.The aim was now to discard that image - but without scaring off its older clientele. The Daimler designers first tried to give the new model a zippier look and feel by lowering its stance and introducing some pretty wild contours. drive it! checked to see whether the carmaker has managed to bridge the generation gap.
examine it! Warning lights - what do they mean?Modern dashboards feature clusters of warning lights. Most of the time they remain idle - but what do we do when they light up red or start flashing? Take the light for ABS, for example. ABS prevents the wheels from locking when you brake. When the warning light goes on, however, it’s telling us there’s a problem. The wheels might now lock when you brake, meaning that you can’t steer and will carry on sliding straight ahead. But flashing lights don’t necessarily require a visit to the repair shop. drive it! provides some tips on how to correctly interpret the lamps and resolve the problem.
vintage! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - the AMC PacerCostume designer Anne Jendritzko has her fair share of curiosities stored away. Among them is her lemon-yellow AMC Pacer from GM. Some say it’s the most unlikely car ever to hail from the US. When the oil crisis hit home in the 1970s, classic cruisers were no longer a sound economic option. As the small-is-good era dawned, one of the fruits was the efficiently-titled Pacer. Unlike most other new models, this baby apparently won cult status because its design was so advanced. drive it! took a look at the weird but wonderful antique car.

Opel is working at top speed on its range of Astra models, and has now sent the latest version of its sporty GTC up to the starting line. Hyundai is going on the offensive with VW. After elbowing its way into the Passat class with the i40, it's now challenging the Tiguan with the launch of its ix35 SUV. We put them head-to-head. And how much is a car that was once owned by a Pope worth anyway?present it! The Opel Astra GTCThe new two-door hatchback version of Opel's Astra GTC is the carmaker's latest launch in the compact segment. The engineers sporty Rüsselsheim have designed the sporty coupé pretty much from the ground up.With a few exceptions like the antenna, door handles and shape of the side mirrors, almost nothing of the Astra has remained. The brawny design - and attractive lines in the rear - are the most striking changes compared to the car's forebears. drive it! took the new GTC out for a spin. compare it! Hyundai ix35 vs. VW TiguanWith just under 35,000 units sold between January and September of 2011, the VW Tiguan was the most popular SUV in Germany. The facelift performed in Wolfsburg this year gave it an even more quintessential Volkswagen look: unspectacular perhaps, but certainly popular.During the same period, rival Hyundai sold around 9,000 of its ix35s. It was launched at the beginning of 2011 as a successor to the Tucson, and has a much more European look than its predecessor. We took the two rivals out to see how they matched up. picture it! The hybrid A6 won't be on the market until next spring, but drive it! got a sneak preview. examine it! Car Design - Car FacesIt used to be easy to tell cars made by different manufacturers apart, but nowadays a lot of models look like twins - at least in silhouette. drive it! stripped the badges from a number of different makes, and then went out to see how well people could still identify them.Sure enough, without the logo, most passers-by couldn't tell a difference - at least from the side. From the front, however, it was a different story. For drive it!, car designer Peter Rosenthal explained the importance of making a statement with the vehicle's 'face'.
vintage! Selling a Car Once Owned by the PopeMichael Fröhlich from Düsseldorf is the owner of a very special car: a Warszawa M20 Saloon built in 1958. The interesting thing about the vehicle is that John Paul II owned it back when he was the Bishop of Warsaw. The current owner hopes that it's illustrious former owner could bring in big cash: he hopes to sell the antique for €250,000. And it's not the only special car he has on offer.

compare it! Hyundai ix35 vs. VW Tiguan

With just under 35,000 units sold between January and September of 2011, the VW Tiguan was the most popular SUV in Germany.

The new two-door hatchback version of Opel's Astra GTC is the carmaker's latest launch in the compact segment.

Among the gadgets on board is an ingenious system to protect the car's paintwork from any scratches or scrapes. examine it! SUVs - How Dangerous are They? Thanks to their imposing presence and jacked-up suspension, sales of sport utility vehicles have skyrocketed. There are now over 1.5 million of them in Germany alone. SUVs are over twice as big and twice as heavy as small family cars, and while that makes them comfortable to drive, they pose a big risk to other motorists.drive it! puts that to the test. What happens if an SUV and a small family car collide? The results were shocking. But the solution is relatively simple: improving the coordination of safety-relevant parts of the body.

From racing models to electric mobility, drive it! presents new sports cars with a long tradition and workhorses for tomorrow's everyday driving.present it! The BMW M5Normally, business class sedans are kept on a short leash. They diligently fulfil their duties, bringing their drivers and passengers from point A to B. But some models just don't fit in. Like the BMW M5.Since 1984 it's been one of the leading high performance sedans in the premium class. Now the Bavarians have unveiled the fifth generation of this super-sports car. The high-revving 4.4 liter V8 engine with M TwinPower turbo technology puts out a staggering 412 kilowatts of power. drive it! unleashed this animal on the race track. picture it! MIA - The Electric Citymobile for AllMIA is a SHE. That's according to her creator, the former VW chief designer Murat Günak. She's more than an electric car. She's a whole new brand and, if Günak gets his way, a revolution in mobility. Several versions go into mass production in 2012.They include a three-seater, a four-seater and a kind of van for cargo transport. The basic model with the smallest battery costs 23,500 euros - and will last for 80 kilometers between chargings. Some 10 thousand units are to be built next year in France. test it! The VW SharanIn Volkswagen's European model spectrum, the 5-, 6- or 7-seater Sharan is the bridge between the Touran minivan and the big Multivan. Its second generation has been on the market for a year now. It's 22 cm longer yet 30 kg lighter than its predecessor. The new Sharan sports sliding doors on both sides built to improve access to the second and third seating rows. After all, it's the variable seating that has made this model so attractive to families. drive it! put the new Sharan through its paces. How much space is there really for passengers and luggage? examine it! Headlight HeadacheOne look under the hood and that's enough to frighten off many motorists. The headlights on modern cars are well hidden among the car's inner workings so getting to them often demands blood, sweat and tears. That means changing headlight bulbs is a staple job for many mechanics, and now more so than ever. Today's generation of cars are designed in a way that drastically reduces the lifespan of headlight bulbs.

vintage: The Farmyard Do-it-yourselfer87-year old Willi Hoffmann always dreamed of working on airplanes. That boyhood dream never worked out, but the farmer's fascination with mechanical contraptions is still as strong as ever. He's transformed his barns into shrines to cars, tractors and farmyard equipment from bygone times, and everything in them works like new.The centerpiece of Willi's collection is an old Opel Olympia from 1938, which runs on firewood!

Bentley has just begun selling the second generation of its luxury convertible line - which is also the most powerful rag-top in the world.Five years after the first Continental hit the streets, all its features have been revamped. As usual, Bentley offers an almost limitless choice of tailor-made interiors. And under the hood, consumers will find a completely newly developed engine that delivers 423 kilowatts of power that can sling the GTC from 0 to 100 kilometers an hour in 4.8 seconds. Yet this dream on wheels comes at a price. In Germany, it sells for about 202,400 euros.

After the Second World War, the economic miracle that resurrected Germany had many guises. As the VW-Beetle began to mobilize the masses, many small businesses relied on a robust, small truck for shipments and deliveries. From coal merchants to plumbers and glaziers to greengrocers, Germany’s upwardly mobile small businessmen said they could swear by the reliability of the Tempo Matador. A businessman, Oskar Vidal, was already making three-wheeled commercial vehicles in 1928. And in 1950, he created an icon with the hardy, four-wheeled truck, the Matador. In the first years, the vehicle came with four-cylinder, 25 horsepower, VW boxer engines that were placed behind the front axle. When that feature changed, so did the fate of the Matador.

Does new really mean good or even better? drive it! wants to get to the bottom of it and pairs Stuttgart's new wagon with its old Bavarian rival, BMW's 3-series.
The new VW Beetle has gotten wider, more powerful and more aggressive, but not at the cost of its classic styling. The Beetle Sport is an attempt to create a cool, fun-to-drive car with a retro feel to compete with the Mini. But how does it match up against the Cooper S? At its core, the new Beetle is actually a Golf GTI with a classic Beetle exterior. The engine is great, but there are few surprises. The car also has the familiar Beetle feel, and that's definitely fun, although the Mini with its go-cart feeling and rally pedigree is also unique. But the new Beetle is definitely a worthy competitor.

Elegant, sporty or simply robust - this week’s edition of Drive It puts a wide range of new car models to the test. present it: Opel InsigniaOpel are now unveiling the 2012 version of the Insignia.Opel’s flagship model has become more elegant and, above all, more energy-efficient. The exterior highlights include new hubcaps and the new “Luxor blue” color. There is a new engine bearing the “EcoFlex” badge – a 1.4-liter turbo unit that replaces the 1.8-liter non-turbo predecessor. Opel have maintained performance, but the new model consumes two liters less gasoline per 100 kilometers. Drive It! takes a closer look at the new Insignia. test it: Lexus IS 250 C ConvertibleIn Japan, few people know that Lexus is putting a lot of luxury cars on the road. That's because Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, doesn't produce its models for the Japanese market. In this segment, the Japanese prefer European cars. So Lexus concentrates on American and European driving enthusiasts. The IS 250C is a convertible that, thanks to its hard top, can be driven year round. Drive it! puts the sleek machine through its paces. compare it: VW Beetle Sport - Mini Cooper SThe new VW Beetle has gotten wider, more powerful and more aggressive, but not at the cost of its classic styling. The Beetle Sport is an attempt to create a cool, fun-to-drive car with a retro feel to compete with the Mini. But the new Beetle is definitely a worthy competitor. examine it: Options for when you get a flat tireA puncture is always a nuisance. It costs time and patience.Let’s be grateful for human innovation, which has given us a variety of options for this problem. Together with a tire expert, Drive It! tests five different solutions: runflat tires, the full-size spare wheel, an emergency spare, puncture repair kit and tire spray. Removing and fitting wheels means getting your hands dirty, of course – unlike with the spray and repair kit options. But just how far and how fast can you drive then? And what about runflat tires? Are they a worthy investment?

Its soft-top retracts in eight seconds, even at 30 km/h. And open or closed, the Golf still has plenty of room in the trunk. Our tester Martin Puthz gives his verdict. spot it! Mercedes ActrosIt's always a major event when a new generation of long-haul trucks appears. The new generation Mercedes Actros has been completely redeveloped from the ground up. For the first time, there's a clear separation between the cockpit and sleeper. But it's not just the interior that's been improved to meet drivers' needs. Many of the assistance systems common to passenger cars are now part of the Actros. In addition, the FleetBoard service tracks fuel consumption and provides direct driving feedback. drive it! went for a ride in this colossal vehicle. vintage! Fiat JollyIn the 1950s, beach buggies like the Fiat Jolly were mainly the playtoys of the rich and famous, who used them to jaunt around the harbors of the Mediterranean.drive it! discovered one of these doorless vehicles by the Rhine River, complete with wicker seats and canopy roof. A trimmed-down version of Fiat's 500 series production model, the Jolly could be described as a "beach bag on wheels".

Mercedes is introducing the new generation of its M-class series. The automaker has traditionally been behind the curve when it comes to eco-friendly technology, but they want to change that now.The new M-class is expected to consume 25% less fuel than its predecessor and it will meet European emissions standards too. All the gas and diesel engines have been redesigned with seven-speed gearboxes - and they, too, consume less fuel, thanks to the start-stop function. The new M-class resembles both the CL luxury convertible and the E-Class, but all in all it's kept the traditional M-Class look. Drive It! takes the new car out for a spin.

Driving Assistance SystemsJust a few years back, driving assistant systems were only reserved for luxury cars. But now you can find the specialized programs in all sorts of new cars, in almost every segment and class. These systems can help you park, pass other cars on the road or even turn night vision into day. Drive it! tests three cars, from the compact, mid-sized and luxury segments. We also visit an engineer in the city of Aachen who shows us a car that drives itself. Are drivers even necessary anymore? We find out.

Germany's biggest camping and recreation trade fair, the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. That has prompted organizers and exhibitors to put on display some products that helped launch the industry in the 1950s.New products on display at this year's Caravan Salon include the return of some retro designs that recall the earliest days of recreational camping. But true innovations are also on hand - from a compact camping trailer/houseboat to a luxury motor home with a sauna. Visitors to this year's fair are sure to find something to awaken a longing for the open road and a quiet campsite to get away from it all.

drive It! and the German auto club ADAC join up to show the dangers of overloading. Our empty Skoda Octavia easily handled the swerve test and remained under control at all stages. Then we stuffed it with all the baggage that a family would take on holiday. The Octavia was clearly harder to handle, but thanks to the Skoda's ESP, our experienced driver could keep the car steady. Taking the Octavia well above the legal load limits was eye-opening. For our ADAC expert, the test results are clear.
